Comas Historic Racing has entered the second running of the Tour de Corse
Historique, which started in Bastia on Monday. The event was run on the
exact route as used on the World Championship in the heyday of rallying,
including in 1972, the year Alpine won the event.
As at the Monte Carlo Historique earlier this year, Comas Historic Racing
is in Corsica with 4 Alpines and a complete support crew.
The four CHR entries consist of one Japanese crew, composed of Hitoshi
Kato and Koki Takahara, driving car #16; Erik, sharing car #15 with François
Gagnaire, a CHR customer; and two machines crewed by French motorsport
journalists, delighted at Erik's concept of providing period equipment
to people wanting to relive the classic events from the cockpit of one
of the cars of that unforgettable era.
Unlike
in today's WRC, speed is not the main criteria for winning historic events.
Navigational skills and consistency in the average speeds imposed by the
organizers are key to success on the stages. As these historic events
are run on open roads, competitors' average speeds must be under 50km/h.
At this game, Hughes Chaussin and Yves Gallet are the first of the CHR
entrants back to base in 18th place.
However, for Erik and François Gagnaire, and as many as half of
the entry list, they are there purely to enjoy themselves and drive at
their own speed.
Everybody
seemed to enjoy the first day on the event; which looked more like a warm
up. Tomorrow will be different however, with entrants scheduled to run
400kms, all on Corsica's famously tight twists and turns.
Remember, the only straight road on this island is at the airport!
